Co-op City
Co-op City is a cooperative housing development in the northeast Bronx, bounded by Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway, and described as the largest housing cooperative in the world. It was built between 1966 and 1973 on the site of the former Freedomland U.S.A. amusement park. Housing is almost entirely high-rise: in PLUTO data about 97% of its roughly 15,900 residential units are in buildings of 20 or more floors. There is no subway inside the area; the nearest stations are Baychester Av and Eastchester-Dyre Av on the 5 line, and bus routes such as the Bx12 Select Bus Service, Bx23 and Bx38 and the BxM7 express connect it to the subway and Manhattan. Givans Creek Woods is a small nature preserve at its north end.
Co-op City has 7,036 open HPD housing violations, 500 of them Class C (immediately hazardous). Inspectors issued 637 new violations here in the last 12 months. That's the 32nd most open violations of 39 neighborhoods in Bronx.

History, bus routes and parks from Wikipedia. Housing figures computed from PLUTO 26v2 residential units, with lots assigned to this NTA through 2020 census tracts (NYC Planning tract-to-NTA codes); building type uses PLUTO building class (C = walk-up, D = elevator, A/B = one- and two-family). Subway stations placed by point-in-polygon test of MTA station coordinates against the 2020 NTA boundary (data.cityofnewyork.us 9nt8-h7nd); 'just outside' means within about 150 m of the edge. Re-verified 2026-10-12: recomputed every PLUTO 26v2 share from the raw lots (2020 tract-to-NTA codes from data.cityofnewyork.us 63ge-mke6) and re-ran the station point-in-polygon test against the 2020 NTA file. Construction dates, Freedomland, bus routes, Givans Creek Woods and Co-op City Field confirmed in Wikipedia and NYC Parks polygons; Riverbay lots total 15,372 units, matching Wikipedia.
