Neighborhood · Staten Island
Tompkinsville, Stapleton, Clifton & Fox Hills
This area runs along Staten Island's eastern North Shore waterfront on Upper New York Bay, from Tompkinsville just south of St. George down through Stapleton to Clifton. Tompkinsville's housing is mostly single-family homes from the early 20th century, Clifton keeps many Victorian houses from the late 1800s, and Stapleton has the eight-story Stapleton Houses, the largest NYCHA development on Staten Island. Urby, a roughly 900-apartment complex, opened in 2016 on the former Stapleton Homeport site, and the Bay Street Corridor rezoning, approved by the City Council in June 2019, allows denser housing along Bay Street between St. George and Stapleton. The Staten Island Railway stops at Tompkinsville, Stapleton and Clifton, one to three stops from the ferry at St. George. Landmarks include Tappen Park with the Edgewater Village Hall and the Lyons Pool, which opened in 1936.
Tompkinsville, Stapleton, Clifton & Fox Hills has 9,219 open HPD housing violations, 1,338 of them Class C (immediately hazardous). Inspectors issued 1,963 new violations here in the last 12 months. That's the 2nd most open violations of 17 neighborhoods in Staten Island.
