New Dorp & Midland Beach

New Dorp and Midland Beach sit on Staten Island's East Shore, with Midland Beach facing Lower New York Bay. New Dorp grew quickly from the 1960s and mixes houses with apartment complexes, while Midland Beach began as a resort and its former summer bungalows are now lived in year-round. The Staten Island Railway stops at Grant City, New Dorp and Jefferson Avenue, and New Dorp Lane is the main shopping street. Miller Field, a former Army airfield next door, is now part of Gateway National Recreation Area. The FDR Boardwalk and Midland Beach line the shore, and the 835-foot Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier opened in 2003. The coast was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy's storm surge in 2012.
