Freshkills Park (South)

This area is the southern part of Freshkills Park on Staten Island's west shore, a park being built on top of the former Fresh Kills Landfill, which took New York City's municipal waste from the late 1940s until it closed in 2001. It is parkland and wetland, not a residential neighborhood. The whole park covers about 2,200 acres, almost three times the size of Central Park, within an area bordered by Victory Boulevard, Signs Road, Travis Avenue and Arthur Kill Road. On the south side, Owl Hollow Fields near Arden Avenue and Arthur Kill Road has four synthetic-turf soccer fields, two of them lit. NYC Parks lists new South Park turf fields and a comfort station among its capital projects.

Freshkills Park (South) has 8 open HPD housing violations. Inspectors issued 5 new violations here in the last 12 months. That's the 17th most open violations of 17 neighborhoods in Staten Island.

Fact-checked October 12, 2026

Re-checked 2026-10-12. 2,200 acres, boundary streets and South Park capital projects (synthetic turf fields, comfort station) from NYC Parks; 360 acres of wetlands from Freshkills Park Alliance. Landfill dates (1948-2001, closed March 22, 2001, reopened after Sept 11), Owl Hollow (four turf fields, two lit, completed 2013) and North Park Phase 1 (opened Oct 15, 2023) from Wikipedia. Earlier text implied North Park, Schmul Park and the New Springville Greenway are in this southern section; they are in the north or along Richmond Avenue, so that was rewritten. Removed unverified claim that the interior opens only for scheduled programs.
