SoHo, Little Italy and Hudson Square

This Lower Manhattan area runs from Houston Street south to Canal Street, from the Hudson River east into Little Italy around Mulberry Street. SoHo is known for its cast-iron loft buildings, with most facades built between 1840 and 1880 and protected by the SoHo–Cast Iron Historic District (designated 1973, extended 2010). Little Italy is now a few blocks of Mulberry Street north of Canal Street, home to the Feast of San Gennaro. Hudson Square, on the west side, holds the Manhattan entrance of the Holland Tunnel and was rezoned in 2013 to allow taller buildings. Subway service includes the C and E at Spring Street, the 1 at Houston Street, the R and W at Prince Street, the 6 at Spring Street and a cluster of Canal Street stations.

Fact-checked October 12, 2026

Boundaries checked by testing MTA station coordinates and landmark points against the 2020 NTA polygon (NYC Open Data 9nt8-h7nd). All listed stations fall inside the polygon (Canal St A/C/E is just outside, in Tribeca, so it is not listed). Historic district facts from Wikipedia (SoHo), which dates the facades, not whole buildings, to 1840-1880; wording adjusted. Holland Tunnel date and 2013 rezoning from Wikipedia (Hudson Square). Feast founding year and 'five blocks of Mulberry Street north of Canal' from Wikipedia (Little Italy); unsourced tenement description removed and Little Italy source added.

“Open” counts every HPD violation not yet recorded as corrected, including old ones owners never certified, so totals can exceed the number of apartments.
