Why receipts matter
A receipt is the simplest proof that rent was paid. It settles arguments about late payments, helps a tenant show their rent history to the next landlord, and keeps a landlord's records straight at tax time. Give one for every payment, and always for cash, where there is no bank record.
What to include
- A receipt number and the date the money was received.
- Who paid, who received it, and their role (owner, agent).
- The property and unit.
- The amount and currency, how it was paid and any transaction reference.
- The period it covers, and anything still owed for that period.
- The signature of the person who received it.
