Fresh Meadows & Utopia
Fresh Meadows and Utopia sit in northeast-central Queens, south of the Horace Harding Expressway, with Cunningham Park along the eastern side and 188th Street as a main road. The area is largely low-rise: about 80% of residential lots in PLUTO data hold one-family houses, while garden-apartment complexes add most of the rest of the roughly 8,100 homes. The best known is the Fresh Meadows housing development built by New York Life Insurance Company on a former golf course, where the first families moved in in September 1947. There is no subway station here; local buses such as the Q17, Q30, Q31 and Q88 connect to the E, F and 7 trains. Utopia Playground was built in the early 1940s on the site of the old Black Stump School.
Fresh Meadows & Utopia has 1,136 open HPD housing violations, 193 of them Class C (immediately hazardous). Inspectors issued 801 new violations here in the last 12 months. That's the 55th most open violations of 60 neighborhoods in Queens.
