Forest Hills lies along Queens Boulevard in central Queens, with Forest Park to the south and Flushing Meadows–Corona Park along its northern side. In PLUTO data about 70% of residential lots hold one-family houses, yet about two-thirds of the roughly 44,000 homes are in elevator apartment buildings. South of the LIRR tracks is Forest Hills Gardens, a planned community begun on 142 acres that Margaret Sage, founder of the Russell Sage Foundation, bought in 1908. The E, F, M and R stop at Forest Hills–71 Av, the M and R at 67 Av and the E and F at 75 Av; the LIRR also stops here. The West Side Tennis Club and its Forest Hills Stadium hosted the U.S. National Championships (the U.S. Open from 1968) in 1915–1920 and 1924–1977.
