How the estimate works

There is no official formula for how many boxes a home needs, so this calculator uses a transparent rule of thumb you can change. It works in four steps.

  1. Rooms × boxes per room. Each room type has a starting number of small, medium, large, wardrobe and dish-pack boxes. Open “Edit boxes per room” to change any of them.
  2. × density. Minimal multiplies by 0.7, average by 1 and packed full by 1.4. Results are rounded up.
  3. + special items. Full bookshelves add small boxes (4 per shelf by default). Extra closet rail adds one wardrobe box for every 2 feet of hanging clothes. You can add dish packs for china or glassware.
  4. + spare buffer. A 10% buffer covers the things everyone forgets. Supplies follow from the total: one tape roll per 20 boxes, about 5 lb of packing paper per dish pack and a quarter pound per other box.

Worked example

A two-bedroom apartment with a living room, kitchen, one bathroom and one full bookshelf, at average density:

  • Small: 8 (bedrooms) + 3 + 6 + 3 = 20, plus 4 for books = 24
  • Medium: 10 + 4 + 6 + 1 = 21
  • Large: 6 + 3 + 2 = 11
  • Wardrobe: 2, and dish packs: 3

Adding the 10% buffer and rounding each size up gives 27 small, 24 medium, 13 large, 3 wardrobe and 4 dish packs: 71 boxes. That needs about 4 rolls of tape and roughly 37 lb of packing paper, or two 25 lb bundles.

Packing tips that save boxes and breakage

  • Heavy items go small. Books and canned goods in small boxes; bedding and pillows in large ones.
  • Fill every gap. Boxes with empty space crush when stacked. Use towels, linens or paper as filler.
  • Declutter first. Every item you sell, donate or toss is space you don’t have to pack. In NYC, see getting rid of furniture and trash when you move.
  • Label two sides. Write the destination room and a short contents list, and number the boxes so you can check that all of them arrived.

Common questions

How many boxes do I need for a two-bedroom apartment?

With our default per-room estimates (two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, one bookshelf and a 10% spare buffer), the calculator suggests about 71 boxes: 27 small, 24 medium, 13 large, 3 wardrobe and 4 dish packs. Someone with very little stuff would need about 53 at the minimal setting; a packed-full home about 97.

What size box should books go in?

Small boxes. Books, records and other dense items get heavy fast, and a large box of books can be too heavy to lift safely or may split. Save large boxes for light, bulky things like bedding and pillows.

How much packing tape do I need?

It depends on the length of the rolls you buy and how you tape. The calculator assumes one roll seals about 20 boxes, and you can change that number. Running out mid-pack is worse than having a spare roll.

Are these box counts an official standard?

No. There is no official standard for how many boxes a home needs. The numbers are a rule of thumb we built for planning, and every per-room figure can be edited. Walk through your closets and cabinets and adjust.

Does packing my own boxes affect the mover’s liability?

It can. Federal rules for interstate moves say that improper packing of boxes you pack yourself is one of the reasons a mover’s liability may be limited. Pack firmly, fill empty space, and don’t pack hazardous materials without telling your mover.

Independent pass 2026-10-12: box quantities are Roofy planning heuristics with no official source; they are labeled as estimates and every per-room number is editable. Recomputed by hand from the defaults: average 71 boxes (27/24/13/3/4), minimal 53, packed full 97, 4 tape rolls, about 37 lb of paper (2 bundles); all match the code. Fixed a rounding bug: floating-point noise made some exact counts round up one box too many (for example 50 boxes plus a 10% buffer showed 56 instead of 55). Tape now shows 0 rolls when there are 0 boxes. Self-packed-box liability, hazardous-materials and over-$100-per-pound statements re-verified in the eCFR text of 49 CFR Part 375 (Appendix A and §375.203).
